Sailing the Saronic Gulf from Athens: A First-Timer's Week

A sheltered, short-hop Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary straight from Athens β€” Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses. The easiest way to sail Greece, and the closest to the ancient sites.

The Saronic Gulf is the most convenient sailing in Greece: it starts a short taxi from Athens airport, the islands sit close together, and the water is sheltered and calm β€” no meltemi. That makes it the ideal ground for first-timers, families and anyone who wants to fold a few days of ancient history into a sailing week.

Day 1 β€” Board at Alimos

Board on the Athens Riviera at Alimos, the country's biggest marina. A short first hop across to Aegina sets an easy tone.

Day 2 β€” Aegina

The pistachio island, with the beautifully preserved Temple of Aphaia on its hilltop β€” a genuine highlight and a gentle first full day.

Day 3 β€” Poros

A narrow channel separates Poros from the Peloponnese mainland; the town wraps around a clock-tower hill. Calm anchorages and a lively waterfront.

Day 4 β€” Hydra

The jewel of the gulf β€” a car-free (and scooter-free) island where donkeys still carry the luggage, and a stone amphitheatre of a harbour. Arrive early for a berth; the evening scene is worth staying for.

Day 5 β€” Spetses

Green, elegant Spetses, with its horse-drawn carriages and shipbuilding history. The Old Harbour is a quiet, characterful overnight.

Day 6 β€” Peloponnese coast

Detour to the mainland β€” the fortified town of Nafplio or the ancient theatre of Epidaurus are within reach for crews who want more history.

Day 7 β€” Back to Athens

An easy sail back to Alimos, with the Acropolis a short drive away if your flight allows a final afternoon.

Practical notes
