Which Mediterranean country is cheapest for a yacht charter?
Turkey is generally the most affordable of the great charter countries — most gulets are Turkish-built and based, and the classic charter is sold largely inclusive. Greece sits in the middle, and Croatia and Italy are at the higher end. As a rough order for an equivalent crewed week: Turkey, then Greece, then Spain, then Croatia, then Italy.
Turkey vs Greece vs Croatia — which should I choose?
Turkey for the best-value crewed gulet "blue cruise" between quiet Aegean bays. Greece for island-hopping with the widest choice, from the big-wind Cyclades to the calm, family-friendly Ionian. Croatia for a short-hop week mixing Venetian island towns, nightlife and national parks — polished but the priciest of the three.
Which Mediterranean sailing destination is best for families or first-timers?
Turkey's sheltered gulet cruising and the Greek Ionian (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia) are the easiest — short hops, calm water and no meltemi. Italy's Amalfi Coast and Tuscany also work well for families thanks to short distances. Avoid the peak-summer Cyclades for a first trip, where the meltemi wind is strong.

For a couple: Italy (Amalfi and Sardinia — glamour and food) or the Greek islands. For a lively friends’ group: Spain’s Balearics (Ibiza and Formentera’s day-charter and beach-club scene) or Croatia (Hvar’s nightlife with the Pakleni Islands next door).
When is the best time to charter in the Mediterranean?
The season runs May to October across all five countries. June and September are the sweet spot everywhere — warm seas, settled weather, fewer crowds and prices 25–40% below the July–August peak. May and October are quieter and cheaper but cooler.
Do I need a sailing licence to charter in any of these countries?
Not for crewed or skippered charters — a professional captain or skipper runs the boat and you are a guest. A licence only matters for bareboat charter, where at least one person aboard must hold a recognised certificate plus a VHF licence.
