The Sporades are the Aegean's gentle, green north — pine forests running down to some of the clearest water in Greece, a protected marine park, and a calm that the wind-blown Cyclades can't offer. If you want island-hopping without the meltemi, this quiet cluster off the mainland's east coast is a hidden gem.
Skiathos — the lively start
Most charters begin at cosmopolitan Skiathos, famous for its 60-odd beaches — Koukounaries and Lalaria among the most beautiful in the Aegean. A good first evening ashore before you slip into the quieter islands.
Skopelos — green and cinematic
Skopelos is the greenest Sporad, its Chora a cascade of white houses and blue-domed churches. The island starred in Mamma Mia!; the tiny cliff-top chapel of Agios Ioannis is the one from the film, and its coves are pure turquoise.
Alonnisos and the marine park
Beyond Alonnisos lies the National Marine Park of Alonnisos-Northern Sporades — the largest protected marine area in Europe, home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal. Anchor in its pristine bays (within the park rules), and let the sense of wilderness sink in.
The remote islets
Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura — uninhabited or nearly so, with anchorages you may have entirely to yourself. This is the Sporades at their most peaceful.
