A little island of hidden inlets across from Nidri — the classic first-night Ionian anchorage, with tavernas that take your lines and cook you dinner.

Yacht Charters in the Ionian
Cypress-green hills tumbling into turquoise bays, gentle afternoon breezes instead of the meltemi, and a taverna quay every evening. The Ionian is the softest, greenest side of sailing Greece — and its most family-loved.
The Ionian is the other Greece — lush where the Aegean is bare, sheltered where the Cyclades are windy, and green from the Venetian centuries of rain on its western hills. Strung down the country's west coast from Corfu to Zakynthos, the islands sit close together in protected water, which makes this the friendliest cruising ground in the country: gentle sailing, short hops, and an anchorage or harbour taverna at the end of every afternoon.
Lefkada is the beating heart of it, connected to the mainland by a causeway and ringed by the charter fleets, with the little islands of Meganisi, Kalamos and Kastos on its doorstep. North lie stately Corfu and the turquoise coves of Paxos; south, Kefalonia's Myrtos beach and Odysseus's Ithaca. The afternoon breeze fills in like clockwork and drops for dinner — the reason families and first-timers are sent here.
What to look for in the right vessel
Filters we pre-applied to the the ionian islands shortlist below.
Sheltered, gentle sailing
No meltemi — the Ionian's reliable afternoon breeze and short, protected hops make it Greece's easiest and most family-friendly ground.
Turquoise coves
Paxos's sea caves, Antipaxos's Caribbean water, Kefalonia's Myrtos — the Ionian's bays are the most swimmable in Greece.
Taverna quays
Tie up bow-to at a village quay and eat ten metres from the boat — Fiskardo, Kioni, Sivota. The Ionian invented the sailing-taverna evening.
Odysseus country
Ithaca, Homer's home, and the Venetian old towns of Corfu and Lefkada layer real history over the green.

PVK / CFU · Preveza (Aktion, PVK) for Lefkada · Corfu (CFU) for the north
Lefkada is the classic Ionian base — reached from Preveza (Aktion) airport by a road causeway, no ferry needed. Corfu (CFU) opens the north, Kefalonia (EFL) the south. All three have direct summer flights from the UK and across Europe.
What you should know
- Why it suits beginners & families
- The Ionian has no meltemi. Winds are light in the morning with a gentle afternoon breeze, distances between sheltered harbours are short, and there is almost always a calm option — which is exactly why it is Greece's top choice for first-timers and families.
- Cruising tax (TEPAI) & VAT
- Greece's monthly cruising fee (TEPAI) and VAT are normally built into the charter price by the operator — confirm on your quote.
- APA & fuel
- Crewed charters run on an APA of about 20–30% of the base for fuel, food, drinks and berths. Short Ionian hops mean modest fuel use.
- Berths & tavernas
- Many Ionian bays have taverna quays where you moor for free or the price of dinner — a defining pleasure of the region. Popular harbours (Fiskardo, Sivota) fill in peak August, so arrive early or anchor off.
- Tipping
- Discretionary, for good service: 5–15% of the charter fee for the crew is the Mediterranean norm, in cash (EUR) to the captain at the end of the week.
Anchorages within reach
Where most week-long itineraries from this port actually go. Sail times are approximate, in fair conditions.
The prettiest Ionian harbour — Venetian houses in pastel around a quay of yachts, the one village the 1953 earthquake spared. Book a berth or anchor just outside.
Odysseus's island — a horseshoe harbour ringed by ruined windmills at Kioni, and the deep, sheltered bay of Vathy. Quiet, green and mythic.
A completely enclosed fjord-like bay lined with fish tavernas — one of the safest, most sociable overnights in the Ionian, popular with flotillas for good reason.
Two beaches with Caribbean-clear water off a tiny vineyard island. A midday swim-and-lunch anchorage; you tender to the sand.
A near-circular bay at the top of Paxos, olive-green hills all around — anchor in turquoise shallows and walk into a village that time forgot.
Onshore
What to do the day before boarding and after disembarking, plus a short list of restaurants worth the walk.
If you start from Lefkada, the town itself is walkable and lively — a causeway island with a Venetian fort and good waterfront tavernas. From Corfu, the UNESCO old town (Liston arcades, two fortresses) is a proper day of sightseeing before boarding.
Flights from Preveza and Corfu leave through the day, so a final swim is easy. With a spare day from Lefkada, the west-coast beaches (Porto Katsiki, Egremni) are a dramatic land excursion; from Corfu, the Achilleion palace and the old town fill an afternoon.
- Tassia (Fiskardo, Kefalonia)Ionian seafood
A Fiskardo institution on the quay — the founding cookbook author's kitchen, famous for its seafood and its welcome to visiting crews.
- Rachi (Exanthia, Lefkada)Greek with a view
A hillside taverna with one of the great Ionian sunsets over the west coast — worth the taxi for a last night ashore.
- Spiros & Vasilis (Kioni, Ithaca)Family taverna
Harbour-front on Odysseus's island — grilled fish, garden vegetables and the slow rhythm of the quiet Ionian.
- Nionios / Rex (Corfu Town)Corfiot
Try the island's Venetian-influenced dishes — sofrito, pastitsada, bourdeto — a cuisine you'll find nowhere else in Greece.
Or consider another port
Same coast, different starting line — the brief case for each alternative.
The opposite Greece — whitewashed islands, big meltemi winds and iconic scenery for confident sailors and lively harbours.
Another sheltered, easy ground — straight from Athens, ideal for a short calm week close to the ancient sites.
Medieval Rhodes, volcanic Nisyros and Symi's harbour — a history-rich east with easy Turkish-coast crossings.
Frequently asked questions
For the ionian islands.
Where do Ionian charters start?
Lefkada (Lefkas marina) is the main hub, reached via Preveza/Aktion airport (PVK) 30 minutes away; Corfu (CFU) serves the northern islands. Both have big charter bases and easy connections from across Europe.
Is the Ionian good for families and beginners?
It's the best ground in Greece for both — sheltered water, no big winds, short distances, and a safe harbour every night. Bareboat first-timers and families with kids are routinely sent here rather than the Aegean.
How is it different from the Cyclades?
Greener, gentler and calmer. The Cyclades are bare, windy and dramatic; the Ionian is lush, sheltered and relaxed. If you want raw Aegean sailing pick the Cyclades; if you want easy swimming-and-tavernas, pick the Ionian.
When is the season?
May to October. The Ionian is pleasant all summer — its afternoon breeze is friendly even in July–August when the Aegean is blowing hard, which is another reason it fills with families in the school holidays.
